no heat from gas furnace

The weather has turned cold and you go to turn the furnace on, and no heat is coming from your furnace! There are a number of reasons this could be happening some no big deal, others more trouble to fix.

Below are a few things to trouble shoot why there is no heat coming from your furnace:

  1. Check to make sure the thermostat for your heater is set above the current room temperature? If the thermostat is not set higher than the current room temperature the heater will not turn on.
  2. Check your circuit breaker box to see if the circuit breaker was tripped (flipped to the off position). If so reset the circuit breaker.  If you see that a fuse is blown, you are going to need to replace the fuse. Be sure to check both the main electrical panel and any secondary sub-panels that supply power to the furnace. Now if the circuit blows again, there is a probably a short in the electrical system providing power to the furnace. Call a contractor if this is happening, this takes a professional to fix.
  3. Make sure that the furnace’s power switch is turned on; it will be located next to or inside the furnace cabinet. If it isn’t on, turn it on and wait for the furnace to start.
  4. Another thing to trouble shoot is the pilot light. It may have gone out. If the pilot light is out, see our guide for lighting a gas pilot furnace. The gas valve may be shut off, so check that the gas valve is open.
  5. If for some reason the furnace motor overloaded, you need to reset the motor. Look for a “Reset” button near the furnace housing and press it. If nothing happens, wait about 30 minutes for the motor to cool, and then try the “Reset” button again.
  6. If you still can not get the furnace started it could be a problem with the thermostat. Check out our guide for trouble shooting a faulty thermostat, or call a local heating contractor and save yourself the time and trouble!
