lighting a gas furnace pilot
Is the pilot light in your gas furnace out? You are in luck, we give you an easy step by step guide to lighting a gas furnace pilot.
You should be able to find instructions somewhere on your furnace as to how the manufacturer recommends you light the pilot, follow those instructions exactly. If you can’t find instructions on your furnace for lighting the pilot follow this general guideline below.
- First find the pilot light assembly. It should have a gas valve with “on”, “off”, and “pilot” settings.
- Next you want to turn the valve to “off” and wait 3 minutes.
- Now turn the valve to the “pilot” setting. To light the pilot hold a lighted match to the pilot opening and at the same time push the reset button on the pilot control panel. Keep the reset button pressed until pilot flame burns strongly, then turn valve to on position.
- If the pilot flame will not stay lit, the opening may be clogged. Turn gas valve off, and clean the opening with piece of wire. If it won’t stay lit after several attempts, it’s time to call a heating contractor.
