furnace maintenance
The first priority in furnace maintenance is to replace your filter every few months.
A furnace filter consists of a fiber mesh in a cardboard frame. The size of the filter is printed on the edge of the frame. An arrow on the edge of the frame indicates the correct direction of airflow through the filter. Air flows from the return-air duct toward the blower, so the arrow on the filter should point toward the blower.
The next step is to clean the blower assembly, fan belts and motor housing. Cleaning blower is critical because openings often become clogged with dirt. First, remove panel that covers filter to gain access to blower or panel on front of furnace.
Clean each fan blade and spaces between blades. Remove all dirt and debris with vacuum cleaner. Vacuum belts and pulleys. Wipe motor housing clean to prevent heat buildup in motor.
If your fan belt looks worn or loose (more than 1/2 inch give) you may want to call a heating technician to replace the belt.
