air conditioner makes noise
Air Conditioners will make noise, there is the noise of the motor starting, the noise of the air circulating and the noise of the duct-work from thermal expansion that can cause a popping sound. But keep in mind if your air conditioner is making a lot of noise, there could be something that needs repair.
While the air conditioner is running, listen to the noises you hear and try to pin-point where they are coming from.
1. Noise in the blower or fan.
Lots of noise from the fan-
You may have a damaged fan cage. If the cage does not spin easily, you may need to replace the fan. Get a air conditioning technician to evaluate this for you.
2. Loose or broken fan belts.
Loose belts-
Loose belts will cause squealing noises when the fan first starts. You may also detect a burning rubber smell if your fan belts are loose. If you have heard either the squealing noise or smelled the burning rubber, you should replace your fan belts right away and set them to the correct tension. The correct tension is really important, so if you are not sure about doing this yourself, call an air conditioning technician.
Damaged fan belts-
If a fan belt has started to come apart but not break all the way, the belts will flap around against the housing of the fan making noise. Turn the fan off and remove the damaged fan belt and replace it. Check for other damage that the broken belts may have caused (damage to wires, filters, duct-work and housings).
