a/c has bad odor
Have you noticed a bad odor coming from your air conditioner? Has the odor become worse over time? Most likely you have a mold and mildew problem. Air conditioning units are a magnet for mildew and mold.
Air conditioners by nature create a lot of condensation, which results in moisture building up in and around the air conditioning unit. If this moisture isn’t drained efficiently molds, fungi, mildew will start growing in your air conditioner. If you don’t change your filters on a regular basis, bad odors will accumulate over time in the filter.
If you have a fungus problem how does one get rid of it and the odor? Below are the steps to find mold and remove them.
- First thing you need to do is find the air conditioner’s condensation drain line. This is usually a plastic tube where the water drains out. Remove the drain line and clean it with a mixture of 30% bleach and 70% water to get rid of the fungus. It’s really important to let this to dry before you replace it.
- The drip pan located near the heat exchange on the a/c is another place to look for mold and mildew. Remove this tray and clean it thoroughly with the bleach & water mixture. Allow it to dry and then replace it.
- Look in the inside of theĀ air conditioning unit. Use a flashlight and inspect every inch of the inside of your a/c. Look for anything that would cause bad odor or smells, like debris or dead animals. Remove any debris you find. Next spray a foaming coil cleaner and allow it to sit for ten minutes or so. This will soften and loosen dirt, grime and oil. Rinse off the the air conditioning unit with a water hose and spray water through the a/c unit until all the foaming cleaner is removed and the water is clear.
